Chapter 6
Kate smoothed out her new skirt. It fit as if it had been made for her. She twirled around and relished the sound of the swishing material. How long had it been since she’d done that?
A brief shot of darkness reminded her that the last time she’d been excited about a dress and social had been David’s last day with her. Her gown had been a beautiful royal blue. Her friend had done her hair up like a princess. It was to have been her special day. David was going to propose, but her fairy tale life had ended the next week.
Shaking off the gloomy thoughts, Kate again twirled in her small room. She looked and felt like a different woman. She prayed that someone would notice her. And she also prayed the mayor wouldn’t fire her.
But her days of going around like a spinster were over. She’d always wanted to marry and have children. Time was running out, but at least there were a few good men left in Lone Oak who were available. And one of them was interested in getting married.

She still had to fight the shyness, but the meals with her friends had helped her get further away from the grave-like shell she’d tumbled into after David. As for the social, Kate had decided that she’d watch Mary Louise and see how she acted.
“Miss Mulvaney, you look positively lovely.” Alice came out of the café and took her arm. “I think we will have to find a new teacher or get used to one that is married. The men won’t be able to keep their eyes from you. Don’t you think so, Mayor Heart?”
Tom Heart turned and gazed at her. “Why, Miss Mulvaney, I agree with my wife.” He grinned. “As it is the wise thing for husbands to do. Don’t you worry though, your job is safe as long as you want it.”
Kate smiled and thanked them. That’s how Mary Louise would respond. She had given them all lessons on being outgoing. Still, it did make Kate wonder that if Mary Louise did know all the answers, why wasn’t she married?
Before Kate was ready, she was walking up to the church. She loved the
